Reuters reported that a jury in Manhattan (New York, USA) ordered Mr. Trump to pay $83.3 million in compensation to former journalist and writer E. Jean Carroll.

The amount the jury ordered Mr. Trump to pay is much higher than the minimum $10 million that Ms. Carroll targeted in the lawsuit.

The jury of 7 men and 2 women, whose identities were kept confidential, took less than 3 hours to reach a verdict after a 5-day trial at a Manhattan court.

Ms. Carroll, 80, first sued Mr. Trump for defamation in 2019 after he denied allegations that he raped her in the mid-1990s. Mr. Trump said he did not know who Carroll was and that she was not

Mr. Trump repeatedly denied the accusations and sued the former journalist for statements against him in media interviews.

Mr. Trump attended most of the trial but was not present in the courtroom to hear the court’s verdict on January 26.

`Absolutely absurd! I completely disagree with both rulings and will appeal in full. This is a witch hunt directed by (President) Biden against me and the Republican party. Legal system

Alina Habba, a personal lawyer for Mr. Trump, said his legal team would `immediately appeal` the ruling.

Mr. Trump has been continuously entangled in legal troubles since announcing his candidacy for re-election as US president in 2024. Last April, he was indicted on 34 charges after an investigation into suspicions that he paid hush money to a star.

In June 2023, prosecutors of the US Department of Justice announced a 49-page indictment, indicting former President Donald Trump on 37 counts related to allegations of violations in the handling of confidential documents and obstruction.

This makes him the first former US president in history to be criminally prosecuted.

Despite these legal troubles, Mr. Trump is still the brightest Republican presidential candidate.
